Wandsworth Council has intensified its campaign against government funding cuts, submitting proposals with three other London boroughs to protect local services and prevent significant Council Tax increases.
The Wandsworth Council, in collaboration with Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, and Richmond Councils, has formally presented proposals under the Sustainable Communities Act. This action aims to urge the Government to reconsider its funding policies, which are projected to reduce Wandsworth’s funding by £84 million annually by 2029, a cut equivalent to 40% of its current allocation. This reduction is substantial enough to impact essential services such as parks, libraries, leisure centres, bin collection, and street cleaning.
The council warns that without a change in government policy, the resulting financial strain could necessitate a substantial rise in Council Tax to maintain essential services. This stance is supported by over 15,000 residents who participated in a borough-wide engagement exercise, with 92% backing the council's action under the Sustainable Communities Act. Residents have provided evidence of the services they value and wish to protect.
This latest submission follows previous efforts by the council, including direct representations to the Prime Minister, a submission ahead of the Autumn Budget, and joint action with other London borough leaders. Councillor Robert Morritt, Leader of Wandsworth Council, stated that residents have overwhelmingly called for action against the cuts. He emphasised that while the council has already identified £79 million in savings and efficiencies, these cuts cannot be absorbed without severe consequences for local services and Council Tax.
Councillor Morritt added, “Residents should not have to pick up the bill for changes imposed by Whitehall. This proposal takes our case directly to Government. We are using every route available to fight for a fairer deal and protect Wandsworth taxpayers.” The council has completed a comprehensive Spending Review to examine service funding, identify savings, and implement financial controls. The Sustainable Communities Act provides a formal mechanism for councils to request the removal of government policies that hinder their ability to improve community wellbeing.

"Residents have given us an overwhelming message: they want us to stand up for Wandsworth and fight these cuts. That is exactly what we are doing."

"We have already been through our own spending line by line, identified £79 million in savings and efficiencies and taken difficult decisions to make sure every pound delivers value for residents. But funding cuts on this scale simply cannot be covered by efficiencies alone without severe consequences for local services and Council Tax."
