The strategy, covering 2026-2031, has been developed with input from patients, residents, colleagues, and local partners. It addresses the needs of a growing and ageing population, persistent health inequalities, and increasing demand for care. The plan is structured around four key objectives: Timely Access, focusing on reducing waiting times; Quality Care, ensuring safe and compassionate treatment; Healthier Communities, collaborating with partners to promote well-being and prevent illness; and Thriving People, fostering a supportive culture for staff.
Achieving these goals will be supported by strengthening foundations in digital capabilities, data utilisation, building maintenance, facility improvements, and financial management. A significant step will be the introduction of Epic, LGT’s new electronic patient record system, in April 2027.
Ben Travis, Chief Executive of LGT, expressed pride in the Trust's progress and highlighted the strategy's ambition to improve care quality, access to services, community health, and staff experience. He acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in 'Team LGT' to achieve lasting change.
Progress against the strategy will be monitored and shared publicly, covering patient experience, safety, waiting times, workforce performance, productivity, and finances. Key ambitions include ensuring 92% of patients begin planned treatment within 18 weeks of referral and improving urgent care, emergency services, and cancer care.
Neil Goulbourne, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer and Deputy Chief Executive, emphasised the importance of working differently with local partners to organise care around neighbourhoods and people's lives, rather than organisational boundaries. This integrated approach aims to identify needs earlier and provide coordinated support, making care more accessible within local communities.
