Scholars gathered to share research and ideas, developing their approach to ethical leadership in the face of complex global challenges. The conference provided a platform for students involved in the Laidlaw Scholars Leadership and Research Programme to exchange knowledge and experiences.
The Laidlaw Foundation, a global non-profit focused on education, established the programme to nurture integrity-driven leaders through research, character development, and leadership training. This year's conference theme was ‘Ambition – Passion, Progress, and Possibility in a Changing World’, with panel sessions and workshops designed to inspire curiosity and ambition.
President Hugh Brady opened the conference, addressing the scholars and guests. He highlighted the shared commitment to making a difference and expressed hope that the event would equip attendees with new ideas and confidence. Zachary Hobart, a fourth-year Medicine student at Imperial, commented that the programme provided the agency to design his own research and apply his knowledge in new contexts, calling the conference a reminder of the cohort's varied talents.
Susanna Kempe, CEO of the Laidlaw Foundation, expressed gratitude to Imperial and President Brady, stating her hope for the future upon seeing hundreds of "brilliant, morally ambitious next-generation leaders" celebrating each other's work.
The Laidlaw Programme at Imperial enables undergraduate students to lead research projects and undertake Leadership in Action placements overseas, addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals. These experiences aim to enhance understanding of global sustainability and societal challenges.
President Hugh Brady stated, “At Imperial, we believe that talent exists everywhere, but not opportunity. One of the most powerful ways we can create a better future is by identifying talented individuals, investing in their development and giving them the support, confidence and experiences they need to make a meaningful contribution to society.” He also thanked the Laidlaw Foundation for its continued commitment.
Imperial has welcomed up to 25 undergraduate students annually to the programme since 2023. The Laidlaw Foundation has renewed its support, enabling Imperial to continue fostering future leaders. To honour this support, Imperial is welcoming the Laidlaw Foundation to the university’s Circle of Benefactors.
