Wandsworth Council has launched a public consultation on new plans to tackle overrunning roadworks and reduce traffic disruption across the borough.

The proposed Lane Rental Scheme would introduce a daily fee for roadworks, varying based on the road's traffic sensitivity. Utility companies and other organisations carrying out works on highways would be required to book time slots for their activities. Fines will also be imposed for roadworks that overrun their scheduled completion times.
The council aims to encourage companies to conduct works during less busy periods, complete them more quickly, or collaborate with others to minimise disruption. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and hold utility companies accountable for the impact of their works.
“

"Roadworks within the borough cause disruption for residents and businesses, so we want to reduce traffic congestion in our borough and hold utility companies to account. We want to know your thoughts on what this proposal means for you, so we can take them into account."

Cllr Nick Austin · Cabinet Member for Transport
Residents and businesses can view a list of proposed roads and a map of the scheme online. The consultation is open until 13 November 2026, and feedback on potential impacts, benefits, concerns, and implementation considerations is welcomed.
