Athletes of all levels can now benefit from a premier running surface at Battersea Park following the extensive refurbishment of the Millennium Arena athletics track. The upgrade, funded by contributions from local developments rather than council funds, has transformed the facility into a World Athletics-certified track.
This certification grants residents, schools, sports clubs, and aspiring athletes access to one of the nation's highest-quality athletics facilities. It means the track is now one of only two venues in London with official World Athletics accreditation, allowing athletes to set officially recognised records. Elite competitors can be assured that the track meets the same standards as those used in major international championships.
“"Achieving World Athletics certification puts Battersea Park on the map as a venue that can support elite performance while remaining a fantastic community asset for residents, schools and local clubs in this iconic setting."
“"It is fantastic to open the upgraded track alongside local young people, some of whom could be the athletes of the future. We hope they, and residents of all ages and abilities, enjoy the benefits of this outstanding facility first-hand."
The official launch event featured community support from Parkrun and the Harlequins Foundation, with children from local schools participating in various sporting activities. This refurbishment is part of Wandsworth Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing sports and leisure facilities across the borough, following the recent renewal of all-weather sports pitches in Battersea Park, also financed by developer contributions.
