Sutton Council has begun investigation works at Carshalton Ponds, suspecting a damaged underground plug is responsible for the water loss. Further investigations are scheduled to continue into next week.
Despite the issues, the recent heavy rainfall is welcomed as it will help sustain water levels in the ponds and minimise the impact on wildlife. The council is collaborating with local animal welfare charities and has placed notices around the ponds to guide the public on reporting distressed wildlife.
The council acknowledges the community's affection for Carshalton Ponds and is committed to finding a long-term resolution to prevent future water loss. An update will be provided once more information is available.
An earlier update on 20 October noted that the ponds are typically fed by seasonal local springs, with SES Water topping up levels when springs are dry. However, recent drought restrictions from the Environment Agency led SES Water to stop topping up the water. The rapid drop in levels on Saturday was unexpected, prompting the council to seek specialist advice on the cause. A contractor was due to start initial investigations later that week.
The council thanked local residents who reported the issue over the weekend and reiterated its commitment to finding a lasting solution.
On 17 October, the council confirmed awareness of the overnight draining of Carshalton Ponds and stated that protecting the ponds and local wildlife was a key priority, with close monitoring to minimise disruption.
