Between May 2023 and June 2026, the British Library’s Business & IP Centre (BIPC) extended its reach through the 'Kickstart Your Business' programme into public libraries in Bromley, Camden, Enfield, Greenwich, Lewisham, Waltham Forest, and Wandsworth. Supported by JPMorgan Chase and local library services, the initiative provided nearly 8,000 individuals with free, practical assistance to develop their business ideas.
The programme specifically targeted Londoners less likely to access mainstream business support. An independent evaluation by Thrive Economics highlighted the significant impact of this accessible, community-based approach, noting that 90% of participants came from under-represented groups. The initiative has been credited with the creation of approximately 460 businesses and around 1,220 jobs.
Data from the evaluation reveals that 8 in 10 participants had never used business support services before, with 9 in 10 leaving the programme more motivated. The economic return is estimated at £2.72 for every £1 spent, with a cost per net job created of £3,080.
Personal stories illustrate the programme's success. Taariq Ahmad, after 26 years in hotels, launched Fernwood Events, a venue-finding agency in Bromley, gaining structure and legal confidence. Helen Ceesay developed Julurie, a jewellery business in Lewisham, finding confidence through workshops and mentoring. Brendan Kennedy established Sidekick in Wandsworth in September 2025, using the programme for reassurance and to trademark his logo.
Further examples include Lolita Sanders, whose natural haircare business Umthi in Greenwich received support for social media, photography, and a trademark dispute, leading to a 'Sustainability Champion' award. Dimitri Dzneladze, after facing loan rejections, received one-to-one support from BIPC Waltham Forest, leading to the establishment of Cronera. Sarah Bennett-Nash of Ikonology Media in Camden used the programme to check intellectual property arrangements as her business shifted focus.
Olu Shobowale and Emma Archibald of Papertunity in Enfield, which transforms waste paper into creative materials, utilised online sessions and one-to-one advice, eventually becoming a CIC with support from BIPC Manager James Baxter.
The 'Kickstart Your Business' programme demonstrated the value of accessible, timely support in fostering entrepreneurship. With most participants new to business support, the initiative successfully connected them to resources and opportunities, turning ambition into action.
