An enlarged prostate is a common issue for men over 50, often leading to frequent urination, disrupted sleep, and difficulty emptying the bladder, which can increase the risk of infections. Traditionally, surgical treatments for this condition, such as the iTIND procedure or Rezum steam treatment, were performed in a surgical theatre.
Following extensive staff training, the King's Urology team is now providing this service as a standard outpatient procedure. This new approach means patients can go home a few hours after their surgery, significantly reducing disruption to their daily lives.
“"Delivering this type of treatment within 15 minutes as part of an outpatient clinic appointment has huge benefits for our patients. It makes treatment quicker, simpler and less disruptive, helping people get home sooner and back to everyday life."
Mr Sanjith Gnanappiragasam, Consultant Urological Surgeon at King's, highlighted the advantages of the new method. He stated, “Since rolling out this new approach, we have treated five patients, and we hope many more will benefit. This will also help reduce waiting times for our patients and improve our efficiency, helping us make the most out of every minute of clinical time.”
