The scholarship aims to support emerging creative talent, funding two RCA students who are pushing boundaries in design, visual arts, and communications. In addition to financial support for their studies, the scholars will receive an exclusive invitation to visit The Pokémon Company headquarters in Japan.
Emily Millward, an MA Architecture student, was selected for her innovative practice exploring the intersection of architecture, visual narrative, and drawing. Her work investigates drawing as a method of thinking and constructing spatial relationships, examining complex ecological systems and the impact of human activity on environments like Lake Windermere.
Millward expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am so pleased to be the recipient of the Pokémon Scholarship this year. It will give me the space and security to focus entirely on my studies, allowing me to explore ideas and approaches that sit at the periphery of conventional architectural practice. I am incredibly grateful for this support, which will enable me to experiment and explore new directions within my work.”
Joey More, studying MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering, was recognised for his interest in applying technology to complex problems through a blend of craftsmanship and cutting-edge approaches. His background in political science research and international market consulting informs his interdisciplinary approach to infrastructure, policy, and culture.
More's recent projects include a bespoke CNC needle felting machine, a smart 'pet rock' for self-soothing, and a custom data visualisation platform. He commented, “The Pokémon Scholarship gives me the opportunity to creatively and intellectually explore during my MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering course in ways that I simply could not have imagined without Pokémon’s support. The scholarship allows me to take meaningful risks and experiment with novel methods and technologies as I develop as a transdisciplinary designer and engineer. I’d like to express my deepest gratitude to the Pokémon with You Foundation for their transformational support.”
