Machenta, an AI spinout from Imperial College London, has announced a $40 million seed funding round, the largest ever for a UK robotics startup. The investment, led by Creandum and Union Square Ventures, will support the development of a novel AI model designed to allow robots to acquire new skills instantaneously after a single demonstration.
Unlike current AI-powered robots that require extensive, multi-day training for individual tasks, Machenta's breakthrough technology aims to give robots human-like learning capabilities, allowing them to adapt to new tasks on-the-fly based on end-user guidance.
"Intelligence is not so much about what you can already do, it’s about how quickly you can learn to do something new," stated Professor Edward Johns, Co-Founder and CEO of Machenta and Professor of Robot Learning at Imperial College London. "Humans don’t need to see the same thing over and over before they can do it. We’ve spent years trying to understand what it would take for robots to learn at the speed of a human. That is what instant robot learning is about."
The company's approach also focuses on scalability, utilising simulated data for pre-training its AI models rather than large, real-world datasets. This method aims to bypass the practical and privacy challenges associated with human data acquisition.
The research underpinning Machenta originated six years ago at Imperial College London, where Professor Johns and his team investigated the potential for robots to learn physical skills as rapidly as humans. The spinout was founded by Professor Johns, PhD student Vitalis Vosylius, and colleagues to scale this work.
Kathi Wilhelm, Partner at Creandum, commented on the team's extensive work, stating, "Very few teams in robotics can point to a body of work like this, which has repeatedly changed what people thought was possible. The team at Machenta has spent years breaking through this extremely hard problem... They’re not starting with just a theory of how robots can learn like humans; they’re building on years of experience actually making it happen."
Professor Mary Ryan, Vice-Provost (Research and Enterprise) at Imperial College London, highlighted the significance of Machenta's success: "Machenta’s technology, and the vote of confidence it has received from investors, is testament to the quality of the research by Ed and his Robot Learning Lab. Machenta’s early success signals an opportunity for the UK to become a global leader in AI-enabled robotics..."
Machenta plans to use the new funding to expand its instant learning model and grow its team at its new office and lab in King’s Cross, London.
