Tonya Toon, Senior Director at Microsoft EMEA, and Louis Brooks, Director at Microsoft/SoftServe, delivered an inspiring presentation to over 70 IT, Business, and Digital Technology students at West Thames College. The session introduced the Empower U programme, designed to support young people in developing skills, building confidence, and overcoming barriers to entering the IT industry.
Through insights from experienced industry professionals, students gained a deeper understanding of the technology sector, available opportunities, and the importance of acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills for success in a rapidly evolving digital world. Students were highly engaged and responded positively to the advice and opportunities shared by the guests.
The visit underscored the value of connecting education with industry, providing students with direct learning from professionals and the chance to explore potential career pathways. The college is now anticipating the next phase of the programme, where students will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at Microsoft's headquarters in the coming months.
“"It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect with industry professionals, build their confidence and gain valuable insight into careers within the technology sector."
Najime Yachou, Careers Advisor, added: "Careers are excited to develop more student-centred programmes like these, giving students the chance to experience the world of work first-hand, build confidence and explore the opportunities available to them. By liaising with employers, we hope to create even more opportunities that connect students with industry leaders and give them valuable exposure to real working experiences and environments."
