The Royal Borough of Greenwich council has committed to delivering thousands of new council, social rent, and low-rent homes over the next decade as part of its 2050 vision.

The council plans to start 6,000 new homes and invest £278 million to enhance the safety, comfort, and energy efficiency of existing council properties. This initiative is a key part of 'The Borough that Creates', the council's 2050 vision focused on creating neighbourhoods where residents are proud to live.
This announcement follows the completion of the award-winning development at Kidbrooke Park Road, which delivered 452 new homes, all designated as social housing for local families. The development includes a nursery, shops, play areas, and 200 new trees.
“

"Everyone deserves a safe and comfortable home they can afford to stay in. At Kidbrooke Park Road, 452 council homes mean 452 roofs over the heads of families who needed somewhere secure. This development shows what a decent new neighbourhood can look like, and the power of council housing."

Councillor Jackie Smith · Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Greenwich Builds and Estate Regeneration
Councillor Jackie Smith highlighted the need for consistent standards across the borough, stating, "But there’s more to do. Over the summer, residents told us the standard of homes and streets depends too much on your postcode. We want neighbourhoods people are proud of across the whole borough. That’s why we’re investing in our council homes and making sure there is the same standard on every street."
The council's corporate plan, approved on Wednesday 21 October, outlines initial steps for 2026 to 2030, including efforts to prevent homelessness and reduce the number of families in temporary accommodation. Greenwich Builds has already completed over 1,000 new council homes, with more under construction.
A new strategy is also being developed to support individuals with diverse housing needs, aiming to prevent homelessness and minimise reliance on temporary accommodation. A public consultation for this strategy runs until 20 December. Additionally, the council is exploring enhanced licensing and planning laws to protect private tenants from exploitation and ensure safe living conditions.
