The Courtauld Institute has been awarded a significant grant by the Denise Coates Foundation, enabling researchers to embark on innovative projects at the intersection of artificial intelligence and art history. The Denise Coates Foundation Awards will provide a total of £250,000 over five years for research grants. These grants will support cross-disciplinary teams of advanced researchers from both The Courtauld and King’s College London.
This initiative builds upon the existing 10-year strategic relationship between the two institutions. It underscores a shared commitment to pioneering research that addresses pressing intellectual, cultural, and societal challenges. The awards will facilitate cutting-edge research leveraging combined expertise across art and visual culture, humanities, social sciences, engineering, computing, and technology.
Researchers will investigate how art history can effectively harness AI, examine how artists have engaged with disruptive technologies, and explore how art historical approaches can inform and shape ethical and equitable digital futures. AI offers the potential to analyse art historical information at scale, presenting exciting possibilities for researchers, collections, and the public by reconfiguring our understanding of images, image-makers, and image viewing.
The research funded by the Denise Coates Foundation Awards will foster critical visual and historical understanding of the vital role of art and artists in the age of artificial intelligence. This grant is expected to enable novel collaborations, new methodologies, and diverse perspectives, uniting leading communities of conservators, historians, data scientists, students, and visitors, with wide-ranging impacts.
