The Amplify programme at Birkbeck aims to address challenges faced by Black and Black mixed heritage students by providing opportunities to explore career pathways, meet industry professionals, and gain practical experience. Launched in November 2025, the initiative seeks to tackle persistent inequalities in student success and graduate employment.
Baldeep Hothi, Career Programme Manager at Birkbeck, stated, “Amplify is about closing the gap between education and opportunity, recognising the talent and ambition of Black students while addressing the barriers that can limit their access to professional networks and career-building experiences.” The programme has focused on embedding employer collaboration and providing personalised support to enhance student success and graduate outcomes.
“"Amplify changed my entire outlook on being a student at Birkbeck. I felt a sense of community and gained so much confidence in myself by attending the sessions and engaging with the resources"
A key feature of the programme includes 15 funded micro-placements, offering students exposure to professional working environments and helping to remove financial barriers. Christina Belloge, Founder of tour operator Melanin Travels Magic, highlighted the mutual benefits of these placements, noting how students help businesses connect with younger audiences and provide external viewpoints.
Birkbeck student Abigail Namwanje Kintu, who completed a Game Development placement with Legal Pythia, shared her positive experience, stating that the programme significantly boosted her confidence and sense of community.
The Amplify programme is supported by funding from the Clayton, Dubilier and Rice (CD&R) Foundation, which partners with Birkbeck to expand opportunities for students to develop employability and gain real-world experience. The university aims to foster an environment where Black students can build confidence and achieve successful futures.
